The breed developed from a naturally occurring genetic mutation that causes the ears to curl backward in an elegant arc. The foundation cat was a stray black female with long hair and unusually curled ears named Shulamith, who was discovered by Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California, in 1981.

Shulamith later produced kittens with curled ears, confirming that the unusual ear shape was caused by a hereditary trait. Breeders began selectively developing cats with the characteristic curled ears while maintaining a healthy domestic-cat body and temperament. The breed was introduced to cat enthusiasts in the early 1980s and quickly attracted attention because of its unique appearance.

The American Curl was formally recognised by major cat associations during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Both long-haired and short-haired varieties are accepted, and the breed can occur in a wide range of colours and patterns.
