Havanese

Breed History:

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and the only dog breed native to the island. It is believed to have descended from small Bichon-type dogs brought to Cuba by Spanish and Italian settlers during the 16th and 17th centuries. Over time, these companion dogs adapted to Cuba's tropical climate and developed into a distinct breed known for its silky coat, affectionate nature, and lively personality. The breed takes its name from Havana, Cuba's capital city, although it was popular throughout the island.

The Havanese became a favourite among Cuban aristocracy and wealthy families during the 18th and 19th centuries, often serving as an affectionate lap dog and household companion. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, many families fled the country, bringing their Havanese with them. These few exported dogs became the foundation for breeding programmes in the United States and Europe, helping preserve the breed from near extinction. Today, the Havanese is admired worldwide as a cheerful family companion known for its intelligence, adaptability, and charming personality.

Today, the Havanese is valued as a loving family companion, affectionate lap dog, and elegant toy breed known for its intelligence, playful nature, and beautiful silky coat.
