Golden Retriever

Free Dog Lake Constance photo and picture

Breed History:

Originally hailed from the Scottish Highlands, Golden retrievers were used initially as hunting dogs. Scottish-based owners needed a dog breed that could catch birds on land or in water as there were many marshes and ponds in their hunting grounds.

As guns improved, the retriever needed to be able to retrieve birds from a distance. To create the perfect retriever, Baron Tweedmouth crossed a Tweed Water Spaniel with a yellow retriever to give rise to the Golden Retriever.

The aim was for the dog breed to be active and strong with a soft mouth for game retrieval. This dog breed came to prominence thanks to its extremely friendly nature in England and was authorized by the Kennel Club in 1911. Moved to North America in the early 20th century, Golden Retrievers became both hunting pets and companions.

Breed Appearance:

As its name suggests, Golden retrievers features boast a golden coat, which is medium in length and lustrous. Their ever-wagging tail, friendly expressions with wonderful superb & symmetry, and flowing movement attract anyone's attention with ease. When it comes to retriever colours, they can be born with a variety of colours, ranging from golden to dark to light. Additionally, their bodies can range from dense to broad and athletic to lean.

Breed Type - Family/guard:

Golden retrievers are generally playful, and gentle, and have many other qualities like being friendly, devoted, and intelligent. They are considered to be the perfect family dog and best suited for those who are new to pets.

From a nature and personality outlook, you’ll be hard to find such a more outgoing, loving, and eager-to-please ally. The only drawback is that they are likely not to bark and lack protection and guarding instincts. Because of this, do not consider your Golden Retriever a good watchdog. However, some retrievers will let you know when strangers are coming. Socialization in the case of a golden retriever is a must.

Training:

This dog breed prefers to be with the owner rather than being taken to the backyard where they can be alone. Even though they are patient, and gentle and enjoy playing with other pets and children, their large size can cause them to overpower a tiny child, especially when they feel excited. Else, they are good candidates for families with children.

Overall, Golden Retrievers are excellent dogs to train, whether in traditional gundog acts or obedience. They are very smart and take delight in pleasing their owners. Well, reward-based training helps boost their confidence. Along with walk-based exercises, they are easily involved in any games that keep them close to their owners.

Health & Care:

While Golden Retrievers have a long lifespan of about 10 to 12 years, they have a higher risk of having cancer and hip dysplasia. Other serious health problems, though not particularly common, include progressive retinal atrophy, elbow dysplasia, cataracts, allergies, and inflammation. Be sure to monitor your dog's health, especially weight as excessive weight will shorten your retriever’s lifespan. Also, inspect its ears and brush its teeth frequently for optimal health.

Living Condition:

Golden retrievers are playful dogs that love long walks and appreciate large open spaces. Beyond this, since retrievers are larger in size, they feel more independent and comfortable with the availability of a larger playing field. However, as long as they have plenty of physical activity and garden space, they can adapt to smaller spaces very well.

This means, that if you don't have a lot of outdoor space or you live in a small house, take your Golden Retriever outside regularly so they can get used to living with you.

Exercise:

Since the Retriever is an active dog breed, it is necessary to provide them with thorough training and involve them in daily exercise. Moreover, it's wonderful for a dog to have access to a playground for fun and to be able to take him for long walks every day.

Retrievers usually feel good in the company of other pets, especially dogs. Additionally, taking them on a trip to the dog park is likely to be appreciated by them. A fun fact about retrievers is that they are known to carry objects in their mouths, so satisfy your dog's oral interest by handing him chew bones and toys.

Grooming:

Golden retrievers are born with the dense coat, so they probably require regular grooming. Due to its water-repellent nature, the undercoat is completely thick and should not be allowed to freeze, causing unnecessary suffering to the animal.

Since you are choosing a retriever, you must trim its nails twice a month to prevent them from splitting or having foot problems. By brushing his teeth several times per week, you should help your pet maintain good oral health. Because golden retriever has droopy eyes, they are more susceptible to ear infections, so inspect your pet's ears regularly.
