History:

In 1966, in Upstate New York, the American wirehair cat with wiry-looking fur was found in a litter. This cat was sold to the breeder, Mrs Joan O’Shea. The breeder develops a kitten and sells it to other breeders. Later on, the popularity of wirehair increased in America. However, this breed is identical to the American Shorthair; every hair in the coat is curly and crimped. In 1967, the CFA recognised it, and in 1978, accepted it for the championship competition.

However, American wirehair is solid black, white, blue, red, or cream. Additionally, cats have large eyes that tilt upwards at the outer corners. The eye-colored cat can be green, blue, or gold.

Training:

American wirehair cats are easy to train. You can begin their training with games of fetch, as they like playing it. Training for basic tasks is easy, but hard tasks need more time and energy. Additionally, training your cat at a young age is easy, but training an old cat becomes difficult, as adopting a new habit for a cat is hard.

Health & Care:

Cats can potentially develop genetic problems as human beings can develop diseases. While you are buying the cat, if the breeder says that the cat doesn't have health issues, then don’t buy from them because they are lying or don't have knowledge about the breed.

The American wirehair develops health issues if it comes across an American shorthair. Health diseases such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It is a common heart disease in cats. While buying the cat, avoid breeders who claim an HCM-free cat and a cat that is not tested for the HCM disease. However, other diseases that can develop are obesity and skin allergies. Moreover, it is necessary to vaccinate the American wirehair with vaccinations such as panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, rabies virus, and Felv.

Living Conditions:

The American wirehair cat is a friendly and lovable animal to both pets and human beings. They need extra care because they can’t live alone and face the issue of obesity if cats eat more food than necessary. Additionally, these cats are highly energetic and active, so take them for walks daily to keep their energy high. Moreover, cats love to cuddle with the kids if the kids are good with them.

Exercise:

American wirehair is an active cat that loves playing games. Also, they must do daily exercise to keep themselves active. Take them for regular walks and outings in the garden. However, they are friendly animals, so they do not fight with other cats.

Regular exercise keeps the bones and muscles of the cat in good condition. Also, it prevents cats from getting overweight. The interactive toys are suitable for American wirehair cats; they stimulate the cat and keep the body in action.

Grooming:

Bathe the American wirehair regularly to remove the dead hair; bathing also makes the coat greasy when the coat develops. Moreover, when a cat is a kitten, they feels a pleasant experience while bathing. Additionally, the grooming they need is weekly nail trimming, regular brushing of teeth with pet toothpaste, and cleaning their ear occasionally with cotton balls or tools recommended by a veterinarian. However, shedding grooming is not required regularly because it will damage, and so does shedding grooming when heavy.
