What food do cats eat?

Cat diet primarily consists of meat. The animal can hunt in wild to satiate its appetite and get its required nutrition but to replicate the same cat diet that in a domestic cat’s life can be slightly tricky. Diet should consist of high-quality protein, moderate amounts of fat and very little carbohydrates.

Meat, poultry, or fish are good sources of protein; there is variety of meats given to cats, chicken being most popular source of protein. Cats do not enjoy the crunch in their food therefore wet cat food is more popular for cats as compared to dry cat food. For homemade cat food buff can be a good source of protein for feline nutrition, but it should be lean and free of excess fat. Lamb if sourced from an authentic source can be good source of protein for cats. Fish is the best food for cats, as it gives the right flavor and nutrition for cat., but it should be sourced from an authentic source as it poses risk of mercury contamination.

Certain human foods, such as chocolate, onions, and garlic, can be toxic to
cats and should be avoided. Cats are not known to have a particular preference for sour tastes. While they can detect sour flavors, their taste buds are not as sensitive to acidity as humans are.

However, some cats may show interest in sour foods or drinks, like citrus fruits or vinegar. This could be due to their natural curiosity or the novelty of the taste. It’s good to be cautious when offering any new foods to your cat, especially those that are acidic, as they can upset their stomach and sometimes be fatal to your cat’s health. Cats' taste buds are not as sensitive to sweetness as humans taste buds are.

Therefore, it is unlikely that sugar would taste bitter to cats. However, cats are known to be more sensitive to bitter tastes than humans, which are thought to be an adaptation to help them avoid consuming potentially toxic substances in the wild. This is why commercial cat foods use bitter flavors as per cat feeding guidelines, such as citrus or quinine, to deter cats from chewing on houseplants or other items they shouldn't eat. One can also offer your cat small amounts of certain human foods as a treat, such as cooked meat or fish, plain cooked eggs, and certain fruits and vegetables like blueberries, pumpkin, and spinach.
