Sloughi

Breed History:

The Sloughi, often referred to as the Arabian Greyhound, is an ancient sighthound breed originating from North Africa, particularly Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Bred by the Berber and Bedouin tribes, the Sloughi was highly prized for its speed, endurance, and sharp vision—ideal traits for hunting game such as hare, wild boar, and gazelle across desert and mountainous terrain.

This noble breed has a long and storied history, appearing in ancient carvings and artwork. It was cherished not only for its hunting prowess but also for its loyalty and companionship. Revered in its native regions as a member of the family, the Sloughi was often protected and esteemed, rarely sold to outsiders. Its calm, dignified nature and elegant form continue to earn admiration today among sighthound enthusiasts worldwide.

Some dogs may have a black mask, black ears, or light brindling.

The breed's streamlined physique reflects its heritage as a swift and enduring desert hunter.

Breed Type – Sighthound:

The Sloughi is an intelligent, gentle, and independent hunting breed.

It is known for being:

  • Loyal and devoted
  • Gentle
  • Intelligent
  • Independent
  • Calm
  • Reserved with strangers

The breed forms deep bonds with its family while maintaining a dignified and somewhat aloof nature around unfamiliar people.

Training:

The Sloughi is intelligent but sensitive and independent.

Training should focus on:

  • Early socialisation
  • Positive reinforcement methods
  • Basic obedience training
  • Reliable recall in secure areas
  • Controlled exposure to people and environments
  • Patient, consistent leadership

The breed excels in:

  • Lure coursing
  • Hunting
  • Agility
  • Companion activities
  • Obedience

Gentle, reward-based training produces the best results, as harsh methods may reduce the breed's confidence.

Health & Care:

The Sloughi is generally a healthy breed but may be prone to several health concerns, including:

  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), although uncommon
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Sensitivity to anaesthesia
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Routine veterinary care, responsible breeding, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight help support long-term health.

Living Conditions:

The Sloughi thrives in active homes where it receives regular exercise and opportunities to run safely.

Ideal environments include:

  • Houses with secure yards
  • Rural or suburban homes
  • Active families
  • Experienced dog owners

The breed prefers living indoors with its family and is sensitive to cold weather because of its short coat and lean body.

Exercise:

The Sloughi has high exercise requirements.

Recommended activities include:

  • Daily walks
  • Running in securely fenced areas
  • Lure coursing
  • Hiking
  • Interactive play
  • Mental enrichment activities

Because of its strong prey drive, the breed should only be allowed off leash in securely enclosed areas.

Grooming:

The short coat requires minimal maintenance.

  • Brushing once per week
  • Occasional bathing
  • Routine ear cleaning and nail trimming
  • Regular dental care

The breed sheds very little throughout the year.
