It was developed by Morten Bak, who bred local farm dogs with imported pointing dogs, likely of Spanish origin. The goal was to create a steady, reliable gun dog suited for Denmark's terrain and hunting style.

Known for its calm demeanour and strong sense of smell, the Old Danish Pointer became a favourite among Danish hunters for bird and small game hunting. Its slow, deliberate tracking made it ideal for working closely with hunters on foot. Though not as widespread outside Denmark, it remains a treasured breed in its homeland for its loyalty, stamina, and reliable hunting instincts.
