Mioritic Shepherd

Breed History:

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog, commonly known as the Mioritic Shepherd, is an ancient livestock guardian breed originating in Romania, particularly in the Carpathian Mountains. For centuries, Romanian shepherds relied on these large, powerful dogs to protect sheep and cattle from wolves, bears, and other predators while accompanying flocks across rugged mountain pastures.

The breed developed naturally through selective breeding for courage, strength, endurance, and a calm temperament rather than appearance. Named after the Romanian word mioritic, meaning "related to sheep," the breed has long been an essential part of Romania's pastoral traditions.

Today, the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog is recognized internationally as both an outstanding livestock guardian and a loyal family protector.
