Carea Leonés

Breed History:

The Carea Leonés, also known as the Leonese Shepherd Dog, is a traditional herding breed originating from the province of León in northwestern Spain. For centuries, shepherds relied on these agile and intelligent dogs to manage large flocks of sheep across the mountainous and rural landscapes of the region.

Developed primarily for working ability rather than appearance, the Carea Leonés became known for its endurance, responsiveness, and exceptional livestock-handling skills. The breed played an important role in traditional transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock between grazing areas.

Although relatively unknown outside Spain, the breed remains highly valued among shepherds and is considered an important part of the country's pastoral heritage.
