Broholmer (Danish Mastiff)

Breed History:

The Broholmer is a large, mastiff-type breed that originated in Denmark. It dates back to the Middle Ages, where it was used as a guard dog on large estates and for hunting stags. The breed was refined in the 18th century under the patronage of Count Sehested of Broholm, after whom the breed is named.

The Broholmer nearly went extinct after World War II but was revived in the 1970s through dedicated breeding efforts in Denmark. It is now officially recognised by the Danish Kennel Club and the FCI, though it remains a relatively rare breed outside Scandinavia. The Broholmer is valued for its calm temperament, loyalty, and imposing presence.

Life Expectancy: 8–10 years

Breed Appearance:

The Broholmer is a giant, muscular, and powerfully built dog with a strong, well-balanced frame.

The breed commonly features:

  • Large, broad head
  • Strong, wide muzzle
  • Dark brown, round eyes
  • Medium-sized drop ears
  • Deep, broad chest
  • Thick, muscular neck
  • Strong, well-developed limbs
  • Long, thick tail carried naturally

Its coat is short, dense, and close-fitting with a thick undercoat.

Common coat colours include:

  • Yellow
  • Golden red
  • Black

Yellow and golden-red dogs commonly have a black mask.

The breed's powerful physique and confident expression reflect its heritage as a guardian and large-game hunting dog.

Breed Type – Guardian Dog:

The Broholmer is a calm, courageous, and naturally protective working breed.

It is known for being:

  • Loyal and devoted
  • Calm and confident
  • Courageous
  • Gentle
  • Protective
  • Affectionate with family

The breed forms strong bonds with its family and is generally friendly and stable when properly socialised.

Training:

The Broholmer is intelligent and generally willing to learn but can have an independent nature.

Training should focus on:

  • Early socialisation
  • Positive reinforcement methods
  • Basic obedience training
  • Leash manners
  • Controlled exposure to people and environments
  • Consistent leadership

The breed excels in:

  • Property guarding
  • Obedience
  • Tracking
  • Therapy work
  • Companion activities

Patient, structured training is important because of the breed's size and strength.

Health & Care:

While generally healthy, the Broholmer, like many giant breeds, is susceptible to:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Elbow dysplasia

  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat)
  • Heart conditions (e.g., aortic stenosis)

Health screenings by responsible breeders are crucial. Due to its size, joint support and weight management are important throughout its life. Routine veterinary care and a high-quality, large-breed diet are essential.

Living Conditions:

The Broholmer thrives in spacious homes where it receives regular exercise and close family companionship.

Ideal environments include:

  • Houses with secure yards
  • Rural or suburban homes
  • Families
  • Experienced large-breed owners

The breed can adapt to indoor living when provided with sufficient daily exercise but is not well suited to confined spaces.

Exercise:

The Broholmer has moderate exercise requirements.

Recommended activities include:

  • Daily walks
  • Hiking
  • Interactive play
  • Obedience training
  • Mental enrichment activities

Excessive exercise should be avoided during puppyhood to protect developing bones and joints.

Grooming:

The short coat requires minimal maintenance.

  • Brushing once or twice per week
  • More frequent brushing during seasonal shedding
  • Occasional bathing
  • Routine ear cleaning and nail trimming
  • Regular dental care

The breed sheds moderately throughout the year and more heavily during seasonal coat changes.

Advantages:

  • Calm, even-tempered, and gentle with family

  • Naturally protective without being aggressive

  • Low grooming requirements

  • Loyal and affectionate; bonds closely with its people

  • Excellent guard dog and deterrent due to size

  • Generally quiet indoors

Disadvantages:

  • Large size requires space and strong handling

  • Prone to joint and bloat-related health issues

  • Needs early socialization to avoid shyness or reactivity

  • Shorter lifespan compared to smaller breeds

  • Not ideal for first-time dog owners due to size and strength

  • Can become stubborn without consistent training
