Ukrainian Levkoy

History:

The Ukrainian Levkoy is a modern, man-made breed developed in Ukraine in the early 2000s by breeder Elena Biriukova. It was created by crossing hairless Donskoy cats with Scottish Folds, resulting in a breed with a distinctive appearance—hairless with inward-folding ears. The name "Levkoy" comes from a type of plant known for its bent or folded leaves, echoing the breed’s trademark ear shape. Recognised primarily by Eastern European and Russian cat associations, the Ukrainian Levkoy remains rare and is not officially acknowledged by major Western registries like the CFA or TICA. Known for their unusual look and affectionate nature, these cats have gained a small but passionate following among enthusiasts of exotic breeds.

Breed Appearance:

The Ukrainian Levkoy has a striking and alien-like appearance, combining a hairless body with folded ears and a muscular, elongated build. The body is slender but strong, with defined musculature, a slightly arched back, and long limbs. Its head is wedge-shaped with prominent cheekbones, a long, straight nose, and large, almond-shaped eyes set wide apart. The ears fold forward and downward, inherited from the Scottish Fold lineage, giving them a distinctive expression. Skin is soft, elastic, and may be wrinkled, especially around the neck, chest, and legs. While the breed is mostly hairless, some may have fine down or sparse fuzz. Skin pigmentation varies and can show any pattern or colour.

Health & Care:

Due to their unique lineage, Ukrainian Levkoys may be susceptible to health conditions from both parent breeds. These include cartilage-related issues from the Scottish Fold (such as osteochondrodysplasia) and skin problems or temperature sensitivity from the Donskoy. Regular veterinary checkups are crucial to monitor joint health and overall well-being. Their hairless skin requires routine cleaning to prevent oil buildup and skin irritation. They should be protected from both sun exposure and cold temperatures, as their skin is vulnerable to burns and chills. A balanced diet, regular grooming, and a low-stress environment support their long-term health.

Living Conditions:

Ukrainian Levkoys are affectionate, intelligent, and people-oriented cats that thrive in indoor environments where they can be close to their humans. They enjoy company and may follow owners from room to room, often seeking warm spots to curl up in, like beds, blankets, or laps. While adaptable to apartments or houses, they need enrichment through toys, climbing structures, and interactive play. They typically get along well with other pets and children, provided they are introduced respectfully. Their calm, friendly disposition makes them good companions for quiet households, though they may become stressed if left alone for long periods.

Grooming:

Despite lacking fur, Ukrainian Levkoys require regular grooming to maintain healthy skin. Their bodies produce natural oils that would normally be absorbed by fur, so weekly sponge baths or gentle wiping is necessary to remove buildup and prevent acne or irritation. Ears must be cleaned often to avoid wax buildup and infection. Nail trimming, dental hygiene, and eye cleaning should also be part of their routine. In colder months, they may need warm clothing or heated beds, while in sunny weather, they must be kept indoors or shaded to avoid sunburn. With consistent care, they remain healthy and comfortable.

Advantages:

  • Ukrainian Levkoys are affectionate and sociable, forming strong bonds with their families and enjoying human interaction.

  • Their unique appearance—hairless with folded ears and a sleek frame—makes them a captivating and exotic choice for enthusiasts of rare breeds.

  • They are intelligent and curious, engaging well with puzzle toys, games, and training.

  • Their low-shedding nature makes them appealing to people with mild cat allergies (though they are not hypoallergenic).

  • Calm and gentle, they often get along with children and other pets, making them suitable for multi-animal households.

Disadvantages:

  • Ukrainian Levkoys require frequent skin care and cleaning due to their hairless nature and tendency to accumulate oil and dirt.

  • They are sensitive to temperature extremes and must be kept in controlled indoor environments, avoiding both cold and sun.

  • Due to their folded ears, they may be prone to cartilage or joint issues, requiring careful breeding and regular monitoring.

  • They are not yet widely recognised, making them hard to find and often expensive to purchase.

  • Their strong attachment to people means they may suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods.
