Neva Masquerade
History:
The Neva Masquerade is the colourpoint variety of the Siberian cat, originating in Russia. Named after the Neva River near Saint Petersburg, this breed combines the robust heritage of the Siberian with the striking colouration of the colourpoint pattern, similar to the Siamese. The breed’s development began in the late 20th century as breeders sought to establish the colourpoint pattern within the Siberian breed while maintaining its traditional traits. The Neva Masquerade was officially recognised as a distinct variety by major cat registries in the early 2000s. Known for its playful and affectionate nature, the breed is popular in Russia and internationally as a beautiful, hardy, and sociable companion.
Size: Medium to large-sized cat
Height: 25–30 cm
Weight: 4–7 kg
Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years
Breed Appearance:
Neva Masquerades have a strong, muscular build typical of Siberians, with a broad chest and rounded contours. Their heads are rounded with a medium wedge shape, large expressive eyes, and a slightly rounded forehead. Their ears are medium-sized, broad at the base, and rounded at the tips. The hallmark of the Neva Masquerade is its dense, triple-layered coat featuring colourpoint markings—darker colouration on the ears, face, paws, and tail—contrasting with a lighter body colour. Eye colour is typically vivid blue, enhancing the striking appearance. The tail is bushy and medium to long, complementing the luxurious coat. Their overall look is one of power combined with elegance and softness.
Health & Care:
Neva Masquerades are generally healthy, robust cats with few breed-specific issues. They require regular veterinary care, a balanced diet, and dental hygiene to stay in top condition. Their thick, water-resistant triple coat needs regular grooming—at least weekly brushing—to prevent mats and manage shedding, especially during seasonal changes. The breed’s energetic and playful nature benefits from mental stimulation and physical exercise to maintain happiness and health.
Living Conditions:
Neva Masquerades adapt well to a variety of living environments, including apartments and houses with outdoor access or secure indoor spaces. They are social, affectionate, and often follow their owners around, enjoying interaction and companionship. The breed typically gets along well with children and other pets, making them excellent family cats. They enjoy climbing, playing, and exploring, so providing scratching posts and toys is important to keep them engaged.
Grooming:
The Neva Masquerade’s dense triple coat requires regular brushing at least once a week, with more frequent grooming during heavy shedding seasons to avoid tangles and mats. Routine care includes nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental hygiene. Bathing is rarely necessary, but can be done if needed. Proper grooming maintains the coat’s softness, volume, and health.
