Nebelung
History:
The Nebelung is a relatively modern breed that originated in the United States during the 1980s. It was developed from a domestic longhaired blue-grey cat discovered by breeder Cora Cobb, who recognised its unique appearance and gentle personality. The Nebelung’s foundation stock included Russian Blue-type cats, resulting in a breed with a similar coat colour but a longer, silkier coat. The breed was officially recognised by TICA in 1997. “Nebelung” means “creature of the mist” in German, reflecting its soft, silvery-blue coat and mysterious aura. Known for their shy yet affectionate temperament, Nebelungs have become admired for their elegance and quiet companionship.
Size: Medium-sized cat
Height: 23–30 cm
Weight: 3.5–5.5 kg
Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years
Breed Appearance:
Nebelungs have a graceful, muscular build, long, slender body, and medium-length legs. Their head is wedge-shaped with large, almond-shaped green eyes and prominent whisker pads. The breed’s signature feature is its dense, semi-long coat that is silky and soft, with a thick undercoat giving it a plush feel. Their fur is a striking blue-grey shade with silver-tipped guard hairs that create a shimmering, misty appearance. Their tail is long and bushy, complementing the coat’s flowing look. Nebelungs move with elegance and poise, exuding both refinement and a gentle, reserved demeanour.
Health & Care:
Nebelungs are generally a healthy breed with no breed-specific genetic disorders commonly reported. They require regular veterinary check-ups, dental care, and a balanced diet to maintain optimal health. Their long, dense coat requires consistent grooming—typically brushing several times a week—to prevent mats and tangles and to keep their fur clean and shiny. Due to their calm and reserved nature, mental stimulation through gentle play and interaction is important to keep them engaged.
Living Conditions:
Nebelungs adapt well to indoor living, thriving in calm and quiet environments. They prefer homes where they can enjoy peaceful companionship and gentle interaction, often forming close bonds with their owners. They may be shy around strangers, but are loyal and affectionate with family members. Nebelungs get along well with other pets and can be comfortable in homes with children who understand their reserved nature. They appreciate cosy resting spots and moderate activity levels.
Grooming:
Due to their dense, semi-long coat, Nebelungs need regular grooming to avoid matting and shedding buildup. Brushing two to three times per week is usually sufficient. Regular nail trims, ear checks, and dental care should be part of routine maintenance. Bathing is generally infrequent but can be done when necessary. Proper grooming keeps their coat soft, lustrous, and healthy.
