Mekong Bobtail

Breed History:

The Mekong Bobtail is a naturally occurring cat breed associated with Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and countries along the Mekong River. The breed was historically known for its distinctive short tail and colourpoint coat, and cats with these characteristics were present in the region for generations.

The breed was formerly known in some countries as the Thai Bobtail. Cats resembling the Mekong Bobtail were reportedly brought from Southeast Asia to Russia, where breeders developed and standardised the breed during the late 20th century. Russian breeding programs played an important role in establishing the modern Mekong Bobtail.

The breed is closely related to traditional Siamese-type cats and is recognised by some international cat organisations. Its short tail is naturally occurring, with individual cats having different combinations of bends, curves, and kinks.

Today, the Mekong Bobtail is valued as an affectionate, intelligent, playful, and social companion known for its colourpoint coat, distinctive bobbed tail, and dog-like personality.
