Mekong Bobtail
History:
The Mekong Bobtail is a distinctive cat breed originating from Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, where it is considered a natural breed. The breed traces its roots back to the royal courts of Siam (now Thailand), where cats with short bobbed tails were prized for their uniqueness and charm. Known historically as the “Korat with a bobtail,” these cats were brought to Russia during the mid-20th century and further developed there, leading to the establishment of the Mekong Bobtail breed. The breed is named after the Mekong River, reflecting its Southeast Asian heritage. Officially recognised by cat associations such as TICA and WCF, the Mekong Bobtail is admired for its elegant appearance, lively personality, and distinctive tail.
Size: Medium-sized cat
Height: 20–25 cm
Weight: 3–5 kg
Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years
Breed Appearance:
The Mekong Bobtail has a muscular, semi-cobby body with a moderate build that combines grace with strength. Its most defining feature is its short, kinked bobbed tail, typically measuring between 4 to 8 cm, which can have one or more kinks or curls. The breed has a wedge-shaped head with high cheekbones, large almond-shaped eyes that are vivid green, and medium-sized ears that are set wide apart. The coat is short, dense, and silky, predominantly seen in the striking “blue” (silver-blue) colour with a shimmering effect, similar to the Korat. The overall impression is one of elegance paired with a playful, energetic demeanour.
Health & Care:
Mekong Bobtails are generally healthy cats with no breed-specific genetic diseases widely reported. Responsible breeders test for common feline conditions and ensure good genetic diversity. Their short coat is low-maintenance, requiring minimal grooming beyond weekly brushing to remove loose hair and maintain shine. Regular veterinary care, including vaccinations, dental hygiene, and parasite control, supports their well-being. Due to their active nature, providing environmental enrichment and exercise is important to prevent boredom and maintain physical health.
Living Conditions:
These cats adapt well to both apartments and houses, enjoying indoor living with access to vertical spaces like cat trees or shelves to climb and explore. Mekong Bobtails are sociable and thrive on interaction with their human families, often following their owners around and participating actively in household activities. They generally get along well with other pets and children, making them excellent family companions. Because of their affectionate nature, they prefer homes where they receive regular attention and mental stimulation.
Grooming:
The Mekong Bobtail’s short coat is easy to care for, requiring only weekly brushing to keep it sleek and reduce shedding. Their grooming needs are minimal compared to longer-haired breeds, making them suitable for owners seeking a low-maintenance cat. Occasional nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care complete their grooming routine. Bathing is rarely needed, but can be done if the cat becomes particularly dirty.
