Khao Manee

Breed History:

The Khao Manee is an ancient cat breed that originated in Thailand, where it has been associated with Thai royalty and nobility for centuries. Its name means "White Gem" in Thai, referring to its brilliant white coat and striking eyes.

The breed is mentioned in the Tamra Maew, or Thai Cat Book Poems, a collection of ancient Thai manuscripts describing traditional Thai cats. Historically, Khao Manee cats were highly prized in Thailand and were traditionally kept by royalty and wealthy families.

One of the breed's most distinctive characteristics is its bright white coat combined with striking eyes. Khao Manee cats may have blue, gold, green, or odd-coloured eyes, with one blue eye and one gold or green eye being particularly prized.

For many years, the breed remained largely confined to Thailand. Khao Manee cats began reaching other countries in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, where breeders worked to establish the breed internationally.

Today, the Khao Manee is valued as an affectionate, intelligent, social, and playful companion known for its pure white coat and distinctive jewel-like eyes.

Breed Appearance:

The Khao Manee is a medium-sized, muscular, and elegant cat with a distinctive pure-white appearance.

The breed commonly features:

  • Heart-shaped or slightly wedge-shaped head

  • Medium-length muzzle

  • High cheekbones

  • Large, expressive eyes

  • Medium to large ears with rounded tips

  • Long, elegant neck

  • Muscular but graceful body

  • Medium-length legs

  • Oval-shaped paws

  • Medium-length tail

The Khao Manee has a short, smooth, fine coat that is characteristically pure white.

The coat is typically:

  • Pure white

  • Short

  • Smooth

  • Close-lying

The breed is particularly famous for its striking eyes.

Eye colours can include:

  • Blue

  • Gold

  • Yellow

  • Green

  • Odd-eyed

Odd-eyed Khao Manee cats have one blue eye and one eye that may be gold, yellow, or green.

The combination of the brilliant white coat and contrasting jewel-like eyes gives the Khao Manee its distinctive and elegant appearance.

Breed Type – Companion / Family Cat:

The Khao Manee is an affectionate, intelligent, playful, and highly social companion breed.

It is known for being:

  • Affectionate

  • Intelligent

  • Playful

  • Social

  • Curious

  • Energetic

  • Vocal

  • People-oriented

The breed generally forms strong bonds with its family and enjoys being involved in household activities.

Khao Manee cats are usually good with children and other pets when properly socialised. They tend to enjoy human companionship and may follow their owners around the home.

Training:

The Khao Manee is intelligent and generally responds well to positive reinforcement.

Training should focus on:

  • Early socialisation

  • Positive reinforcement

  • Basic handling

  • Harness training

  • Recall training

  • Interactive games

  • Mental enrichment

The breed can learn:

  • Basic commands

  • Tricks

  • Fetch

  • Harness walking

  • Puzzle toys

  • Interactive games

Short, varied training sessions help keep the Khao Manee mentally stimulated.

Health & Care:

The Khao Manee is generally considered a healthy breed, although congenital deafness can occur in some white cats, particularly those with blue eyes.

Potential health concerns include:

  • Congenital deafness

  • Dental disease

  • Obesity

  • Kidney disease

  • Urinary tract problems

  • Age-related health conditions

Not every white or odd-eyed Khao Manee is deaf, but hearing evaluation can be useful, particularly for breeding cats.

Routine veterinary examinations, hearing assessment when appropriate, regular dental care, a balanced diet, parasite prevention, appropriate exercise, and maintaining a healthy body weight help support long-term health.

Living Conditions:

The Khao Manee adapts well to indoor living but benefits from plenty of interaction and enrichment.

Ideal environments include:

  • Apartments

  • Houses

  • Urban or suburban homes

  • Families with children

  • Homes with other cats

  • Homes with cat-friendly dogs

The breed enjoys climbing and exploring, so cat trees, scratching posts, window perches, tunnels, and interactive toys are useful additions.

Because of its highly social nature, the Khao Manee may become lonely if left alone for extended periods.

Exercise:

The Khao Manee has moderate to high exercise requirements.

Recommended activities include:

  • Interactive play

  • Wand toys

  • Chasing games

  • Fetch

  • Puzzle feeders

  • Cat trees

  • Climbing structures

  • Hunting-style games

  • Short training sessions

Around 30 to 60 minutes of active play and exercise per day helps maintain physical fitness and mental stimulation.

Interactive games are particularly beneficial because the breed enjoys activities involving both movement and problem-solving.

Grooming:

The Khao Manee has very low grooming requirements.

  • Brushing once or twice per week

  • More frequent brushing during seasonal shedding

  • Occasional bathing when necessary

  • Regular nail trimming

  • Routine ear cleaning

  • Regular dental care

Its short, smooth coat is easy to maintain and generally does not mat.

White coats may show dirt more easily, so occasional bathing or gentle cleaning may be useful when necessary.

Advantages:

  • Affectionate and people-oriented

  • Intelligent and trainable

  • Playful and energetic

  • Distinctive pure-white coat

  • Striking blue, gold, green, or odd-coloured eyes

  • Low grooming requirements
