History:

The Javanese is a modern cat breed developed in North America during the 1950s and 1960s. Despite its name, the breed did not originate in Java or Indonesia. The name was chosen as part of a naming tradition used for Oriental-type cats.

The breed was developed from Balinese and Oriental Shorthair breeding programs to produce an elegant, long-haired cat with the slender body, large ears, and intelligent personality associated with Oriental breeds.

The Javanese is closely related to the Balinese cats (long-haired Siamese), Colourpoint Shorthairs, Oriental, and other Siamese-related breeds. Depending on the cat association, it may be recognised as a separate breed or considered a long-haired variety of the Oriental Shorthair.

The breed was recognised by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in the 1980s. Over time, it became known for its wide range of coat colours, silky semi-long hair, blue or green eyes depending on the colour variety, and highly social personality.

Today, the Javanese is valued as an intelligent, affectionate, athletic, and highly interactive companion known for its elegant body, silky coat, large ears, and lively temperament.
