Highlander

History:

The Highlander is a relatively new and distinctive cat breed developed in the early 2000s in the United States. It was created by crossing the Desert Lynx with the Jungle Curl to produce a domestic cat that resembled a wild feline but with a gentle and sociable temperament. The breed was originally called the Highland Lynx, but the name was later shortened to Highlander to reflect its fully domestic lineage. Recognised by The International Cat Association (TICA) as an advanced new breed, the Highlander has quickly gained attention for its wild looks, including curled ears and bobbed tail, paired with a playful, affectionate personality.

Size: Medium to large

Height: 25–35 cm

Weight: 4.5–9 kg

Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years

Breed Appearance:

The Highlander is a muscular, athletic cat with a striking appearance that hints at wild ancestry. One of its most defining features is its naturally curled ears, which curve backwards in a loose arc. Another hallmark is its short or bobbed tail, often kinked or curled. Highlanders have a broad head, strong jawline, prominent whisker pads, and expressive eyes that range in colour. Their body is powerful and rectangular, with long legs and large, rounded feet. The coat can be short or long, thick and plush, and comes in various colours and patterns, including tabby, spotted, and marbled. Despite their wild appearance, Highlanders are entirely domestic cats with no recent wild cat ancestry.

Health & Care:

Highlanders are generally robust and healthy, but as with all breeds, they benefit from regular veterinary care. Their unique physical traits, such as curled ears and shortened tails, do not typically cause health problems when bred responsibly. However, poorly bred cats may occasionally experience spinal or tail issues. Their dense coat, especially in long-haired varieties, requires weekly brushing to remove loose fur and prevent matting. Shorthaired Highlanders need less grooming but still benefit from regular brushing. Routine vaccinations, parasite prevention, and dental care are essential for long-term health, along with enrichment to keep them active and mentally stimulated.

Living Conditions:

The Highlander adapts well to indoor living and enjoys being part of a family. They are sociable, confident, and active cats that get along with children, other cats, and even cat-friendly dogs. Their playful, sometimes clownish nature makes them a delight in interactive households, and they enjoy games, climbing, and puzzle toys. Because of their size and energy, they benefit from vertical space like cat trees and shelves. Highlanders are curious and involved, often following their owners from room to room. While adaptable, they do best in homes where they receive regular interaction and opportunities for physical activity.

Grooming:

Grooming needs depend on coat length. Shorthaired Highlanders require minimal grooming—just weekly brushing to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. Longhaired Highlanders need brushing two to three times a week to prevent tangles and mats. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning (especially important for curled ears), and dental hygiene should be part of their care routine. The breed is not prone to heavy shedding, but seasonal shedding may occur. Bathing is rarely necessary unless they get especially dirty. With consistent but low-effort grooming, Highlanders stay clean, healthy, and comfortable.

Advantages:

  • Highlanders are affectionate, playful, and social cats that form strong bonds with their families and love being involved in household life.

  • Their exotic, wild appearance—curled ears, bobbed tail, and muscular body—makes them a visually striking and unique breed.

  • They are highly adaptable and do well in homes with other pets or children, thriving on interaction and companionship.

  • Their grooming needs are moderate, and both coat varieties are relatively easy to maintain.

  • Intelligent and curious, Highlanders enjoy puzzles, games, and learning tricks, making them engaging and entertaining pets.

Disadvantages:

  • Their active and energetic nature may be too much for owners seeking a calm, low-key cat.

  • Because the breed is still relatively rare, finding a reputable breeder can be difficult, and kittens may be expensive.

  • They require regular interaction and stimulation to prevent boredom, which may lead to mischief if ignored.

  • While health problems are uncommon, poorly bred Highlanders may suffer from tail or spinal abnormalities.

  • Their strong bond with humans means they may not enjoy being left alone for long periods and can become lonely or anxious without sufficient attention.
