German Rex

History:

The German Rex is one of the earliest known rex-coated cat breeds, origin tracing back to Germany in the 1950s. The breed’s founding cat, a curly-coated female named Lämmchen, was discovered in a hospital garden in Berlin after World War II. She became the foundation of the German Rex line when bred with domestic cats, passing on her unique wavy coat. The German Rex was recognised as a distinct breed before the more globally popular Cornish and Devon Rex cats, though its numbers remained small. Today, the breed is still rare but cherished by enthusiasts for its affectionate nature, distinctive coat, and playful demeanour.

Size: Small to medium

Height: 20–25 cm

Weight: 3–5 kg

Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years

Breed Appearance:

The German Rex has a slender yet muscular body with fine-boned legs and rounded paws. Its head is round with prominent cheekbones, medium-large ears set slightly outward, and large, expressive eyes that can come in various colours. The breed’s most defining feature is its soft, wavy coat caused by a recessive gene. The fur is short, plush, and silky, with a rexed (rippling) appearance that covers the entire body, including the belly and tail. Unlike some other rex breeds, the German Rex’s coat is denser and less sparse. The breed comes in various colours and patterns, including solid, bicolour, tabby, and tortoiseshell.

Health & Care:

German Rex cats are generally healthy and have no breed-specific genetic disorders widely reported. Their short, wavy coat is low-shedding and easy to maintain, though it may be more sensitive to temperature changes due to the lack of a dense undercoat. Occasional skin issues, such as dryness, can arise but are uncommon. Regular brushing with a soft brush helps keep their coat in good condition and removes loose hairs. Basic veterinary care, such as vaccinations, dental hygiene, and parasite prevention, is important for maintaining overall health. These cats are active and benefit from physical and mental stimulation.

Living Conditions:

German Rex cats adapt well to most indoor living environments, including apartments and houses. They are social, curious, and affectionate, often forming strong bonds with their humans. These cats love attention and will happily follow their owners around the house. Their playful and inquisitive nature means they enjoy exploring, climbing, and interactive toys. They do well in homes with other cats or gentle dogs and are usually good with respectful children. Because of their light coat, they may seek out warm, cosy spots and should be kept indoors to avoid temperature extremes and protect their sensitive fur.

Grooming:

The German Rex is a low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Its short, soft coat requires only occasional brushing—about once a week—to keep it clean and healthy. Because they have less fur than typical cats, bathing is rarely necessary unless they get dirty. Their ears should be checked regularly for wax buildup, and their nails should be trimmed as needed. Dental hygiene is important and can be maintained with vet-approved toothpaste or dental treats. Overall, grooming needs are minimal, making them ideal for owners seeking a cat with a unique appearance but easy care.

Advantages:

  • German Rex cats are affectionate, friendly, and people-oriented, making them ideal for families, singles, and seniors looking for a loving companion.

  • Their unique wavy coat is not only eye-catching but also low-shedding and easy to care for, requiring little grooming effort.

  • They are intelligent and playful, enjoying games, training, and interaction with toys or people throughout their lives.

  • Adaptable and sociable, they thrive in various household settings and typically get along well with other pets and children.

  • Their quiet but engaging personality means they’re expressive without being overly vocal, adding charm without disruption.

Disadvantages:

  • Their rarity can make them hard to find, and responsible breeders may be few, limiting availability and increasing costs.

  • Because of their fine, thin coat, German Rex cats may be more sensitive to cold temperatures and drafts.

  • They crave attention and may become lonely or bored if left alone for long periods without stimulation or companionship.

  • Although generally healthy, some may experience occasional skin sensitivities that require attention or special grooming products.

  • Their energetic nature means they need enrichment and play; without it, they may become mischievous or overly demanding of attention.
