Gaucho Sheepdog

Breed History:

The Gaucho Sheepdog, also known as the Ovelheiro Gaúcho, is a traditional herding breed originating in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Developed by the region's gauchos (South American cowboys), the breed was bred to herd sheep and cattle across the vast grasslands known as the Pampas.

Its ancestry likely includes various European herding dogs brought by settlers, including collie-type and shepherd breeds. Over generations, these dogs were selected primarily for working ability, intelligence, endurance, and adaptability rather than appearance.

Today, the Gaucho Sheepdog remains a respected livestock-working dog in southern Brazil and is recognized as an important part of the region's agricultural heritage.
