Foldex

History:

The Foldex is a relatively new and rare breed that originated in Canada in the 1990s. It was developed by crossing the Scottish Fold, known for its distinctive folded ears, with the Exotic Shorthair, famous for its plush coat and flat face. Breeders aimed to create a cat with the folded ears of the Scottish Fold and the round, teddy bear-like appearance of the Exotic. The result was a friendly, round-faced companion with a sweet personality and moderate grooming needs. Recognised by the Canadian Cat Association (CCA) in 2006, the Foldex remains uncommon outside Canada but is gaining attention for its endearing looks and affectionate temperament.

Size: Small to medium

Height: 20–25 cm

Weight: 2.5–5 kg

Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years

Breed Appearance:

The Foldex has a compact, muscular body with a short, sturdy frame and a broad chest. Its most defining features are its rounded face, short nose, and folded ears, though some Foldex kittens are born with straight ears. The breed has large, round eyes that give it a sweet, expressive look, and the head is round with full cheeks. The coat is dense and plush, similar in texture to the Exotic Shorthair, and comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Foldex cats have short legs, thick tails, and a soft, cuddly appearance, often described as “owl-like” due to their round heads and alert expressions.

Health & Care:

Foldex cats may inherit certain health issues from their parent breeds, especially the Scottish Fold. A primary concern is osteochondrodysplasia, a genetic disorder affecting cartilage and bone development, particularly in cats with folded ears. Ethical breeders test and avoid breeding two folded-ear cats to reduce this risk. The breed may also face common brachycephalic issues like tear staining and dental crowding. Despite these risks, many Foldex cats live healthy lives with regular veterinary care. Their coat requires weekly brushing to keep it clean and to manage shedding. Routine eye and dental care are recommended, especially in flatter-faced individuals.

Living Conditions:

Foldex cats adapt well to indoor life and are suitable for both apartments and houses. They are quiet, affectionate, and people-oriented, enjoying time spent on laps, cuddled beside their humans, or following them from room to room. Though playful, they are not overly active or demanding. Their gentle disposition makes them well-suited for homes with children or other pets, as long as introductions are done gradually. They prefer calm, cosy environments and enjoy soft bedding, warm spots, and interactive play that stimulates their curious nature. Foldexes are content indoors and generally don’t require outdoor access.

Grooming:

The Foldex’s plush coat is easy to maintain with regular brushing, typically once or twice a week, to keep it smooth and to reduce shedding. During seasonal changes, more frequent grooming may help manage loose fur. Cats with flatter faces may need regular cleaning around the eyes to prevent staining or irritation. Nail trimming, ear checks, and dental care should be part of the routine. Overall, their grooming needs are moderate and manageable, especially compared to long-haired breeds, making them a good choice for owners seeking a balance of charm and convenience.

Advantages:

  • Foldex cats are affectionate, calm, and easygoing, making them excellent companions for singles, families, or seniors seeking a low-drama pet.

  • Their teddy bear-like appearance, with folded ears and round eyes, gives them an irresistibly cute and unique look.

  • They are typically quiet and mild-mannered, preferring snuggles and gentle play over high-energy antics.

  • Adaptable to small or large living spaces, Foldex cats are happy indoors and don’t require elaborate environments to thrive.

  • Moderate grooming and a stable personality make them a manageable breed for first-time cat owners.

Disadvantages:

  • Foldex cats with folded ears may be at risk for osteochondrodysplasia, which can cause joint pain or mobility issues if not ethically bred.

  • They may also inherit brachycephalic traits from Exotic Shorthairs, including tear staining, dental problems, or breathing issues.

  • Because of their rarity, finding a responsible breeder can be challenging, and kittens may be expensive or have long waitlists.

  • They thrive on companionship and may become lonely or bored if left alone for extended periods without stimulation.

  • Some Foldex cats may not tolerate rough handling well and are better suited to homes with gentle children or calm pets.
