Bolognese

Breed History:

The Bolognese is an ancient companion breed originating in Bologna, Italy, from which it takes its name. A member of the Bichon family, the breed is believed to descend from small white companion dogs that were popular around the Mediterranean for centuries. By the Renaissance, the Bolognese had become a favourite among Italian nobility and wealthy merchant families, admired for its affectionate nature, intelligence, and elegant appearance.

The breed was frequently exchanged as a prestigious gift between European royal courts and was owned by notable figures such as Catherine the Great of Russia, Maria Theresa of Austria, and members of the Medici family. Following a decline in popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Bolognese came close to disappearing. Dedicated breeders in Italy and other parts of Europe successfully revived the breed through careful preservation efforts. Today, the Bolognese is cherished as a loyal family companion and elegant toy breed known for its calm temperament, intelligence, and distinctive fluffy white coat.

Today, the Bolognese is valued as a devoted family companion, affectionate lap dog, and charming toy breed known for its gentle personality and enduring loyalty.
