Should I feed my dogs a grain-free and gluten-free diet?

As pet parents, we want to ensure our furry companions get the best regarding their nutritional and physical well-being. One common question in pet nutrition is why one should switch to a grain and gluten-free diet. Where can they find the right products? Is it necessary, or not? Let’s deep dive into this subject to understand the facts and help you make an informed decision.

Why should you avoid feeding your dog food items with grains?

Grains were never a part of a dog’s diet, most of the energy needed came from the fats that they consumed through the meat. Grains can be replaced with vegetables such as pumpkins and sweet potatoes which can provide them with the same levels of nutrition while keeping your dog healthy throughout. Grains should be avoided because:-

  1. Diabetes: They consist of high levels of carbohydrates which break down into sugar causing rapid spikes in blood sugar levels in turn leading to diabetes. Diabetes in dogs can increase the risk of cancer by causing high levels of inflammation and obesity, which can promote tumour growth.

  2. Allergies: Grains such as wheat contain gluten protein which can cause inflammation in dogs with symptoms such as itching, skin rashes and digestive issues.

  3. Sugar High: Excess levels of sugar in their blood can cause lethargy and depression, due to their body’s inability to use the excess levels of glucose in their bloodstream.

  4. Weight Gain: Most are high in carbohydrates which can lead to weight gain if fed in excess. Grain-free dog foods consist of vegetables such as pumpkin and sweet potatoes which contain good carbohydrates.

  5. Digestion: It is biologically proven that dogs are unable to digest them as most grains today are Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and have low levels of protein which can cause damage to the lining of their digestive system causing loose stools.

  6. Flatulence: They can also cause the dog to produce high levels of gas, which isn’t only smelly, but also can cause severe discomfort and cramps to the dog until it’s passed.

  7. Gluten: Many, such as wheat and corn contain gluten which can have several negative health implications such as allergic reactions, digestive issues and skin disorders.

Why should you switch to a gluten-free diet for your dog?

As mentioned above, Gluten can trigger allergic reactions and other health issues. Although most dogs can tolerate it well, 20% of all dogs are allergic to gluten in some capacity. Other dogs may have or may be developing allergic reactions to it which may further lead to skin disorders and digestive issues.

Gluten sensitivity varies from pet to pet with different levels of intensity. Typical indicators of gluten sensitivity include:-

  1. Digestive Distress: In the case of some cereals-sensitive pets, diarrhoea, vomiting, gas formation and bloating are common signs indicating digestive distress.

  2. Dermatological Issues: In some pets, itchy inflamed skin, and excessive loss of hairs could be symptoms of gluten allergy.

  3. Systemic Inflammation: Prolonged inflammation induced by a sensitivity to it has been associated with numerous conditions such as cancer, autoimmune diseases and arthritis.

There are several benefits which pets may experience when they switch to a gluten-free diet which aren’t limited to, but include:-

  1. Relieving Symptoms: By not feeding your animal with products containing gluten one will reduce body inflammation; skin problems as well and digestive irritation.

  2. Promoting Overall Health: Your pet's general health and well-being can be supported by a customized gluten-free diet, which will ensure that they flourish and lead happy, active lives.

Finally, it should be noted that not all pets are affected by gluten and some may have adverse reactions to its consumption. By being familiar with the signs of gluten intolerance and opting for gluten-free food where appropriate, you will enhance your pet’s well-being and contentment. Remember that the best person to guide you on your pet's food choices is your vet.
